You can simply cut flowers from the garden and bung ‘em in a vase. And for the most part, that’s just the job. But when time permits or the flowers deserving, try conditioning stems before arranging; notice what a difference it makes to their longevity.

When showing these techniques, I’m met with surprise by how much effort I make to prepare material. When one has nurtured plants for months, if not years, why wouldn’t we take such care for that moment of flowering?

I often work with an event florist and teacher who buys from all the local growers. Cissy from Wildstems and I spoke often of ‘the art of the cut’. Referring to the knowledge and skill of the picker.
