Looking back on winter images over the years, there have been beds and borders looked far ‘tidier’ than they do today. I no longer ‘cleanse’ beds of the summer annuals or add much compost to mulch in the autumn. Instead I choose different methods of winter soil preparation now and my flowers are growing stronger, faster and healthier despite doing less!
How I prepare beds is very dependant on what is being planted next. There is most certainly a ‘chicken and egg’ flow chart. Or perhaps ‘bulb or annual’ choice. The first thing to consider is exactly what your plan is for next year. Let’s put that aside right now; if you know what you are planting where (#impressed) then the choosing is going to be easy. If you don’t, come with me…. (and join my online Winter Planning Class in January!)
