From September and through to December, is perfect spring bulb planting time.

Planting bulbs is one of my least favourite growing tasks. There is nothing to show for the efforts of digging hundreds of holes or trenches. You’d think I’d be pleased to tidy up and put them away but no. I am irritated by planting bulbs!

But the contrary gardener that I am, I adore the moment as plants emerge magically from the earth. This year I loved these narcissus that I naturalised through hellebores and aqilegia.

Anyway, it’s time again to be choosing and planting bulbs for the spring again. That’s bulbs that flower from about Christmas (those that are forced indoors) through to late May outside.

I believe myself to be well placed to advise you here after spending hundreds of pounds, probably more, on bulbs to cut and sell. There have been some very painful lessons!

Here are my favourites for spring flowers and those that will repeat flower for years before you need to lift and divide (more plants YAY).
