Organic matter is the food of the soil and essential to growing great flowers.

Every year our soil gets better and better as we add more organic matter. I believe the best organic matter is that you make from materials from your own plots.

I compost all our stems, floristry leftovers and most weeds to create soil conditioning compost to improve our soils water and nutrient retaining qualities. We have a sandy loam soil which is very easy to work but it doesn’t hold moisture or nutrients well. Soils have improved by adding compost when a bed is cleared or to mulch around permanent planting.

All floristry trimmings from stripping stems are saved for the compost.
